Modular Environment

Project was created using Adobe Photoshop, 3DS Studio Max and the Unreal Engine.

Photoshop was used to create the repeatable textures. 3DS Studio Max was used to model out the various figures and construct the space with to determine its modularity. The Unreal Engine was used to create the space, add atmospheric effects as well as the lighting for the final renders.

For this project I decided to work on modular environment from a reference picture from Ryse: Son of Rome. The focus for this project was to create easily repeatable images that I could be laid out with little difficulty. Looking at the reference image, I looked for sections of the environment that were repeatable and determined what pieces I needed to create for those parts.

The upper walkway, Pillars and archways and the tiled ground floor were clear candidates for being modular pieces, however I had to decided how I wanted to separate the pieces, especially the archways. I decided to split the pillars into two parts for more modularity, simplicity and be interchangeable between the two different tops or bottoms.

For proof of modularity I researched various architectural styles and decided to build out a space that was influenced by the town squares found in the the city of Italy. Not only did this new location have similar architectural stylings as the original work but in the way they were a natural evolution of the Roman style as well.
